I am currently a Lecturer in Engineering Design at a University, prior to this I worked in secondary schools as a specialist physics teacher. My experience from working at these levels of education has emphasised the need to ensure fundamentals in science are mastered by students for continued success in education & beyond. My resources aim to clearly communicate complex scientific principles through clear visuals and explanations - with well structured tasks to practice what has been learnt.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'State of Matter (Solids, Liquid and Gases)' written in line with new AQA Physics specification. Lesson Outline: Starter tasks pupils with drawing particle diagrams of different states of matter. Kinetic theory is review in details for each state of matter. Energy levels of each state of matter are discussed and compared. Students are given a task to act out the different states of matter to model them, this allows for discussion of key concepts that must be communicated and how well the models explain different phenomenon. Changes of states are reviewed to identify the different processes that can occur with change of state including sublimation. A simple experiment shows evaporation and condensation in action for pupils to observe. Evaporation, condensation and sublimation are then discussed in detail. Lesson concludes with review questions and a writing challenge. Lesson Objectives: - State key differences between solids, liquids and gases. - Identify properties of solids, liquids and gases. - Explain the energy differences between different states of matter. - Explain in detail the processes of evaporation and condensation.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Melting and Boiling points of substances (changes in states)' written in line with new AQA Physics specification Lesson Outline: Starter uses 5 quick question to recap some prior content question some key concepts for the lesson. Pure substances are discussed using a visual game to recognise if a pure substance is being shown or not - leading to a key definition. Melting and boiling points are then highlighted and linked back to the previous changes of states illustration. Impurities in substances are then discussed to show the importance of pure substances in melting and boiling points. An experiment to acquire data on melting and boiling points of water is outlined which lead to plotting a change of state graph. An ideal change of state diagram then allows the teacher to discuss with the class trends and key points along the graph. Lesson Objectives: - Identify pure substances and mixtures. - Explain what is meant by melting point and boiling point of a substance.- - Compare and contrast boiling and evaporation. - Detail changes in state of substance using a graph.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Moments, Gear and Equilibrium' written in line with new AQA Physics specification. ALL ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS INCLUDED IN POWERPOINT Starter poses the common question of how easy is it to open a door close to the hinge point which makes a very fun class demo and nicely leads into the lesson on moments, A variety of simple devices that make use of levers is shown to identify what they all have in common which highlight they all produce a great turning effect/force. Two experiments are provided to investigate either applied force and turning effect or distance from pivot and turning effect. This helps pupils identify the two contributing factors to moments and therefore the equation. A series of question practice use of the the moment equation. Balanced moments and equilibrium is explained in relation to a see-saw and then explained with the equation allowing for review question to be completed. An exam question is provided also. Further a small section on gears is included to relate the principles of moments to gears. Firstly pulleys are shown to make it more easily related to moments which is then directly shown with gears. The use of high gears and low gears with vehicles is explained. (I will revisit this aspect to integrate firmly into the main lesson). Lesson Objectives: - Define what is meant by a ‘moment’ and its units. - Resolve simple moment problems with the moment equation. - Explain how moments can be increased and how they can be useful. - Apply the principle of moments to gears and their uses. - Resolve moments in equilibrium.

Complete lesson on Sound with key content from AQA Physics. Starter uses simple task to get pupils thinking about how sound can be represented and how these may look like different sounds. The lesson contains the bell jar and oscilloscope but as these often require a specialist or dedicated time to use links to on-line simulators are included which shows these very clearly and are easy to use. The on-line oscilloscope allows you to change the frequency and amplitude of an audible sound the class can hear allowing you to question them on the wave changes and effects. Also included is a short description and discussion of echoes. End of lesson uses a written task for pupils to summarise the key points on volume and pitch. New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Atoms and Radiation' written in line with new AQA Physics specification. Lesson provides a basic introduction to the unit of Nuclear Radiation, ideal for introduction and low ability groups. Starter prompts pupils to write or draw what they know about nuclear radiation onto a post-it note, this can then be reviewed by the teacher to start a discussion on misconceptions and highlighting good knowledge. A brief background on the discovery of radiation is given in relation to Henri Becquerel and Marie Curie. A simple explanation of nuclear radiation is given with some review of the nucleus and ionising radiation. Detection of radiation is highlight with a Geiger-muller tube and counter. The three types of nuclear radiations are stated and the nature of random nuclear decay is highlighted. The lesson concludes with a fun true or false about nuclear radiation with some videos to offer further explanation where appropriate. A summary worksheet is provided.
