The knowledge organiser includes details of well-known Anglo-Saxon leaders and people, details of Kingdoms, a map showing how the Anglo-Saxons settled, information about battles and daily life, food, clothes and an Anglo-Saxons timeline. In the past, I have used these lessons with children from across upper KS2 (years 5 and 6) however, with some adaptations they may be suitable for other year groups. The entire novel is broken down in to 10 double (and in some cases triple) lesson bundles, meaning that there is a total of 23 individual lesson activity sets here - one for each chapter of the text. -1. These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills, whilst introducing them to the novels of popular author Emma Carroll. The eight sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for whole class reading sessions on: -Escape to the River Sea; -Frost Hollow Hall; -In Darkling Wood; -Letters from the Lighthouse; -Secrets of a Sun King; -Sky Chasers; -The Girl Who Walked on Air; -When We Were Warriors. Each whole class reading session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in upper KS2, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The resources are also suitable for home/ remote learning.
