Squares, cubes and roots pixel colouring
An activity to test knowledge of squaring, cubing, square rooting and cube rooting. Pupils need to answer the questions and then colour all the corresponding squares the assigned colours. Answers are included.

Simplifying ratios and expressing ratios as fractions
A lesson on simplifying ratios, with some questions. Also included is questions relating to linking ratios and fractions
Sharing in ratios
A complete lesson on sharing in ratios. Includes a burglary activity which I found on here, but can't remember who shared it!
Metric Conversions
A lesson on converting between mm, cm , m and km.
It includes a starter on rounding.
It works through a flow chart conversion method, and examples.
There is then a short differentiated activity on converting units of length.
There is also included a more difficult conversion activity based on world records, answers are within the lesson
Quadratic Inequalities
A full lesson on quadratic inequalities. The starter is solving by factorising. It then has full worked examples and questions/answers on sketching quadratics. It then leads on to fully worked quadratic inequality examples, and then has a differentiated solving quadratics activity. The harder ones require rearranging, making them also suitable for A-level. The plenary is a spotting mistakes activity, which will allow you to see which students fully understand the topic.

I would normally teach them in the above order. These lessons provide enough material for at least an hour on each. All lessons have full answers and are designed to be challenging (and non-calculator). My students enjoy learning the history behind subjects and why we learn them, so the lessons incorporate this where possible. All lessons include full activities and stretch and challenge possibilities. Topics covered include:

Surds multiplying one bracket
A decode the joke activity for Expanding one bracket with surds. Builds in difficulty to include negatives, adding surds, and simplifying surds. Makes a good self marking activity, and the sympathy laughs at the bad joke are always entertaining. Feedback would be great!
Pythagoras' Theorem Worksheets
A set of worksheets for Pythagoras’ Theorem.
One is for when the hypotenuse is missing, and includes problem solving and applied questions.
The second is mixed questions including again problem solving type questions.
Solutions are also provided.
They are suitable for more able KS3 and Foundation/GCSE candidates
Squares, cubes and roots
This lesson runs through squaring, cubing, square rooting and cube rooting.
At each point it covers the history and background of the topic, and also the key skills associated.
This is a non-calculator lesson and is based around them learning and being familiar with the first 15 square numbers and 8 cube numbers.
There are two embedded activities based around the above, and included is my pixel colouring activity on squares, cubes and roots.
There is also a challenge activity based on Waring’s problem for cubes.

Rounding to Significant Figures, Spot the Error
A spot the error activity for rounding to significant figures, a collection of common errors, and students need to find the error, correct it, and explain what the student should have done. Might make a good plenary or consolidation activity.

Standard form spot the errors
A resource for AFL or a plenary activity to help test students understanding of standard form, including calculations and converting.
I ask students to mark it and leave comments to help the students correct their mistakes.
It is hand written so apologies for my handwriting!!

Area of Sectors
This is a lesson on finding the area of sectors. It includes worked examples and an exercise on finding the area of sectors. Following this it includes worked examples and questions on finding the area of segments. Also included is an extension to work backwards and find the radius when given the sector area.
Thanks to Daniel Burke for some of the worked examples on area of sectors, and others for providing some of the questions.
World records - Metric length conversions
An activity based around current world records, requiring students to convert between mm, cm, m and km.
Some are multi-step requiring conversions from mm to m etc
Divisibility Tests
This resource was made for my Year 7 group. It was the first of a set of lessons on factors, multiples and primes, and was designed to teach them some key tests to help decide if a number was prime.
I printed the slide with the key divisibility tests on, and the pupils used whiteboards for slides 7 through 10. I also printed the grid of questions for them to work through on Slide 11.
The challenge questions at the end were used to stretch my more able and are based on those from the Junior Maths Challenge.
HCF and LCM
This resource is designed to be used after my lessons on divisibility tests and product of primes. This full lesson covers finding the HCF and LCM using prime factorisation. It includes some written problems and also finding HCF and LCM when numbers are given as product of primes. The lesson is fully animated and contains solutions throughout.
Product of Primes
This resource was used with my high ability Year 7 students. This could be used for higher year groups or adapted for other ability groups.
I used this after my lesson on Divisibility tests (available for free).
It covers firstly the Sieve of Eratosthenes, then why we would find the prime factorisation.
There is then examples of how to express a number as a product of primes, and a worksheet on this. The lesson then progresses to using the prime factorisation to find all the factors of a number and roots of a number.
The lesson has all answers provided.
Written methods
A lesson on written methods. It could be used for KS3 or upper KS2.
Included is a powerpoint which works through the following:
- initial understanding check
- Multiplying by numbers ending in .5, with differentiated activity and answers
- Addition and subtracting , with defuse the bomb activity
- Addition and subtracting with decimals, with Tarsia activity
- Then a lesson involving dividing decimals, all problems centred around money. There is an unscramble on this including written problems.
This should be a couple of lessons worth of work!
The powerpoint is set to a pink background for my dyslexic students but this could be changed easily!
Pythagoras' Theorem Series of lessons
Please be reassured that when downloaded the slides are all properly formatted and animated, the preview does not do justice.
This is a 3 lesson pack for teaching Pythagoras’ Theorem. I would aim this at top level foundation and higher as some of the questions are higher order and involve applying other skills. It includes questions on missing hypotenuses and shorter sides, as well as applied questions leading to finding areas of isosceles/equilateral triangles and other shapes. Included are also questions on missing diagonals in squares and rectangles. Answers are included for all (including worked solutions for all questions and exam questions), and I would recommend calculator use throughout.
Expressing quantities as fractions
A whole lesson on expressing quantities as fractions of other amounts. There a simple questions, which expand to involve questions where you express shaded amounts of shapes as fractions of whole shapes.
