10 BALL GAMES: SUBVERSIVE TEACHING IN 21ST CENTURY. We innovate, constantly. We see the extraordinary in the everyday. We know that real education is about feeding the soul, not just passing exams. We sometimes see children with problems, we don't see children as problems. We re-draw the boundaries of the possible. We survive, despite the slings and arrows of outrageous policy. Freely sharing resources gives us time to do these things. Please help yourself, and play on.

Full title: How useful is the movie Gladiator for investigating the power of the Roman Army ? Extended source evaluation really. Half a term’s work (at 1.5hrs per week approx). Students look at the opening scenes of gladiator and identify the interpretation within the movie. They study the Roman Army and then compare their findings to the movie, concluding with a formal answer to exam style question on reliability/utility (adaptable).

Students use chronology on paper slips to create a huge graph across the desks. This graph (and obviously the discussion which goes with it) answers 2 questions: was foreign policy in this period a success or a failure?; what factors influenced foreign policy in this period? Photograph of student graph included for reference. Lesson plan (mirrors activity for foreign policy 1509-1527 available on TES) plus key notes for students revision.

How to measure significance

A P4C style lesson exploring the concept of historical significance and offering KS3 students ways of measuring it. Very detailed lesson notes on first couple of pages

Pecha Kucha y9 big homework competition

Pecha Kucha is a Japanese powerpoint competition format. It is based on 20 slides auto timed to last 20 seconds each. I have reduced this to 10 slides for KS3. My reasons for doing this are: 1) It allows for personalised learning 2) it gives homework more of a meaningful structure than a 'finish off...&' homework, which is always tempting under pressure 3) it should help students develop research and presentation skills they will need later 4) it should preclude &';reading from slides' presentations 5) it should help to develop constructive criticism as a skill

Paper dolls of Roman army tactics

Guide to cutting paper structures that act as models for the 4 main tactics of the roman army - the wedge, orb, repel-cavalry and tortoise. Not flashy but worked really well with my students as a 3d visualisation rather than just looking at a drawing. easy to enact also, once has been seen. short, straightforward activities included also.

The Somme 1916

Exercise to encourage collaborative learning and to develop analytical essay writing skills. Class is split in half. Each half has different interpretation (Haig was / was not a terrible leader of the allied forces) These teams collect evidence into a table under 3 headings. Then pairs are made - 1 from each interpretation. Using guidance given, they write an analytical answer exploring the extent to which Haig deserves the title 'the butcher of the Somme'.

PPT and follow up resources for a lesson using 'spaced learning' technique to explore the causes of WWI. Detailed notes about delivery for those who haven't used this technique before are provided in word doc. It's great fun and you might be surprised how good the students' memories are even a week later. http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=6007881
