Honestly absolute piece of cake to do this and you get some really fabulous work for your classroom walls. The image attached was created in about 2 minutes. Google Leslie’s artwork and you will see what it looks like and how your students can get so very close to recreating it so easily.

So I made a few videos to get my year 7s going with Python turtle using the Mu Editor as it is the most “kid-friendly” IDE out there and most importantly it’s a free download. Anyway it’s all done rather well and has kept the kids busy for about 10 * 50 minute lessons. Basically write you name, draw a house, add some birds, use some hex, draw some flags. I like to think it covers pretty much most tools and will take the kids on to defining their own functions and calling them when required, Works well, especially in the flags exercise if you want lots of stars like a Brazilian flag or and American one. Also we show how to use the random library, so each picture can be different each time ie. birds of different sizes and positions in the image. Our final assessment was to give them a picture of a rocket made of filled in rectangle, triangles, squares and circles, get them to recreate it, and let them choose what background it would sit on, so the more able could do a night sky with stars and a crescent moon.

So here is a wonderful lesson that kids genuinely really enjoy doing. I hate it when people say kids love doing something when they don’t really but this is different, this lesson genuinely gets them all really motivated because it’s easy to do and the outcomes can be very funny indeed. You simply take 2 video files of speeches made by Donald Trump, work out what you want him to say by extracting the words from the speeches, then stitch them altogether. I use Wevideo to do this because then kids don’t have an excuse that they don’t have the software at home as it’s just in the browser. You can also save any work from class directly on the Wevideo website and they can carry on at home. The editing will keep kids busy for a couple of lessons and you can differentiate by getting your more able students to source other Donald Trump speeches and text from this site https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches and as the video points out it’s easy enough to add subtitles and credits too.

Quite simply there is nothing out there better than this set of tutorials to get your students’ heads around scratch. Most teachers will use YouTube videos or paid for resources and frankly the kids learn very little by just repeating what they see on the video or printed in front of them. Why is this app different? Because each video sets a task for the student to do and eventually it builds into a playable game. If your students struggle with a with a task then there is also a solution video and there is always a final video to identify extension tasks to stretch and challenge the most able. I promise you that you will change what you currently use and have your students use these videos on your tablets at school. Best of all the apps are completely free. Here’s a fabulous resource to keep KS3/4 kids busy for several hours and show them how to make “proper” newspaper front pages using DTP and graphics using good old Publisher 2019 (which your students can get for free if you have a suitable school Microsoft licence - most do) and photopea.com (which is free and online). Loads of skills, simple to follow, easily accessible, fun for your students and you get artwork for your classroom walls. It’s what we in the trade call a win/win/win/win/win

I think this has to be my favourite fun exercise to do with graphics and it will keep your students busy for a couple of hours at least, whilst you also get a whole world of fabulous artwork to put up on your classroom walls too. Oh and as it’s all done using www.photopea.com then no-one has the excuse for not doing the work as they have access to the site 24/7. Oh and even you old teaching hands may learn something new, after all did you know www.remove.bg was a thing? It is and it saves hours of magic wanding / tolerance / lassooing / erasing etc…

First of all £10 - that’s a bargain, you will save so much time and the websites you get will be so much better than you have had in the past, honestly I should be charging hundreds. I never understand why you would want to build a website from the ground up with CSS and HTML - it’s daft, no-one in the real world does this, they use the likes of WordPress, SquareSpace, Wix or Shopify. Now if you go down the WordPress route, you can get free hosting, your students have access to build their sites 24/7 from anywhere they can access the net, and they will build something that actually looks professional. WordPress is not template driven like Wix. I have had many students go through this unit at Distinction level using Wordpress and these videos show you how to do it all. Themes, pages, media, plugins, CSS, Javascript and even some SEO to tie in with unit 3. I promise you your students will build cracking websites really quickly and you won’t go back to HTML or the likes of Dreamweaver or WYSWIG editors, it’s not 2005 you know, the world has moved on. Oh one thing if you watch the preview video on YouTube please understand the real videos are much better quality and easier to see what’s going on.

Series of videos to show kids how to make an insert for a video game case. The example uses a well known series of football games and will keep your students busy for many hours and they will learn some really good graphics skills along the way. It’s a really good project that your students will enjoy. I made the videos a few years ago now but it all still works today.

Some basic graphics work to get kids to make fabulous artwork to adorn your classroom walls with. All using the free browser based graphics editor called Pixlr so everyone can access this lesson. Jolly good fun that will keep the kids busy for a couple of hours at least. First video is aimed at kids from a school in China, where I am teaching, and they would not have known the British people in the picture, doesn’t make any difference to the skills being taught though.

Dataset and question paper very suitable for level 3 BTEC Unit 2 ICT controlled assessement. Not complex one at all and gentle introduction to the sorts of questions that you will see in the real exam.

More than enough material to introduce building websites with Serif WebPlus, from the basics of master pages and menus through to the use of smart objects like polls.

Just Basic is probably the easiest "in" to programming that I have come across. The videos below are about 3 hours worth of screencasts to get you going with the software and will keep your students busy for many lessons. There are lots and lots of different little exercises and challenges to do, it's not just one great big build. Before you wade into the actual screencasts you will need to ensure you download the zip file that has 4 .bas files in it, these will be needed for the little challenges that I set throughout the videos.
