This stations activity pack helps students analyze the literary and rhetorical devices in one of the greatest speeches Frederick Douglass’, his 4th July speech. In this engaging activity, students collaborate to analyze the use of different persuasive devices and figures of speech in five extracts from Douglass’ speech. In this collaborative environment, they are able to work together to do a rigorous in-depth analysis of some of the most prominent parts of the speech, examining how Douglass addressed his audience and modified his tone to persuade his readers that slavery is an abhorrent practice.
