Functional Skills English: Letter Writing for L1 & L2 Learners. 29 page PPT and Booklet
This is a twenty-nine page PowerPoint that is designed to be used with learners who are due to complete their English Functional Skills writing examination. It is designed for L1 and L2 learners, however, can be used to teach Entry 3 learners.
This module is: Letter writing. The PowerPoint is a step-by-step guide of how to write and format a formal letter. At the end of the presentation, there are two letter writing tasks for learners to attempt.
For one of the letter writing tasks I have given on-screen ‘tips’ on how to plan the content of the letter and how to ‘bulk out’ a draft in order to raise the learners word count.

How to plan your letters content and how to ‘bulk out’ your writing.
A booklet is also attached with the PPT letter writing texts included and a 1 page overview of how to correctly format a letter.

Reading: This is an English Functional Skills reading revision guide that has been written for learners who will be taking the level 1 reading assessment.
The guide includes an overview of all the information they will need to know in order to pass this assessment ( based on the NCFE level 1 assessment).
The fifteen page revision guide includes:
How to skim and scan a piece a text
The purpose of a text
Layout features of a text
Facts and opinions
Tone and style
Main point of a text
Summary of a text
Each section contains information on each topic and gives examples and tips. This is given to my learners before their assessments and has helped them a lot.
Writing: A ten page revision guide that helps learners to understand how to pass their test.
P2 Explains the marking criteria and what learners need to include in their writing in order to pass the assessment
There is a guide on how to correctly format the following: letters, emails, articles, reviews and reports. I have also provided picture examples on how each text should be formatted.
Learners are then given tips on how to ‘bulk out’ their writing by using word association. A practice exam question ‘scenario’ is given. It also includes a visual step by step guide on how to use word association to generate ideas.

This is a PPT which will help level 1 learners to answer the reading assessment’s ‘Purpose of a Text’ question.

Functional English Skills Creative Writing Lesson: How to Bulk Out and Plan Your Writing
A 13 page PPT Lesson.
This lesson aims to prepare learners for their L1/L2 writing exam. As a class, they will discuss a sample question and the tutor will show them a basic answer. The tutor will then show learners how to bulk out their writing: in order the meet the exam’s word count criteria.
There is then a practice question ( an article) and tips on how to answer this question.
This PPT should cover an hour session.

Macbeth Bingo Game. 18X Cards and Grid Sheet. Characters & Themes English Literature GCSE
A great lesson starter to get your students to remember character’s names and themes from the play.
Instructions: Cut out the images on the grid sheet and place them inside of a container. Give each player a bingo card. As you draw an image from the container, ask the players to cross them out on their grid sheet. The first player who gets 3 in a row, wins the first round! Continue playing the game until someone gets a full house!
English Literature DNA by Dennis Kelly - Character Description & Scenes Revision A3 Mapping Sheet
An A3 PDF resource that I created and used with my mixed ability KS3 English class.
I got the learners to write down each character in the play and asked them to write down the character’s personality traits. They then drew each character (their interpretation of what they thought that character would look like).
Learners were also asked to pick a key quote from the play that best reflected that character’s personality. Following this, they then wrote an overview of each scene. This was in preparation for a practice essay question.

54 Flash card prompts which will help to spark your learners’ imaginations.
These flash cards contain pictures from a number of different fictional genres: gothic, western, sci-fi, historical, romance, modern and fantasy.
Instructions: Print out the cards double sided. One side will have the picture prompts on and the other a zig zag pattern. Cut the cards out and laminate them. Get your learners to pick one card each and write a story or description by using the pictures as a stimulus.

Two revision guides - one catered for NCFE and one catered for City and Guilds.
Both are 6/7 page revision guides that helps learners to understand what to expect in their reading assessment. They also gives advice and examples of how to answer the questions on the exam paper.

This is a 26 page PowerPoint that can be used in the delivery of Functional Skills Reading Entry Level 3. This PPT includes everything learners need to know in order to pass their reading assessment (it is based on the NCFE awarding body criteria).
