A full lesson based on the new AQA (P7.5) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers activity, count rate and the Geiger counter. Students are then taught how to calculate half life from a graph using examples. A worksheet is then completed (taken from another TES author). Students then complete a simple practical to model half life; they roll small cubes (or dice) and take the cubes that land silver side up (or on the number 1) out of play. Students plot a graph and answer questions relating to the practical. There is then a final grid challenge that students can use to assess their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are incorporated into the sides, timers are used to promote pace. Video used and radiation sickness discussed in order to incite interest. A full differentiated lesson based on the new AQA (P3.4) SOW. The lesson covers issues with fossil fuels, the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy and outlines the Chernobyl disaster (mainly to incite interest). A differentiated question grid is used to apply learning and to conduct AFL (answers included). The lesson then covers the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy resources prior to a GCSE PP question (answers included) facilitating further application of knowledge and AFL. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.

A full revision lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.5-1.8). Starter and practical exercise taken from other TES authors. Lesson covers calculating resistance, PD and current (triangle method), permanent and temporary magnets (including electromagnets). Answers to each exercise are incorporated through animation. Use as a follow on lesson from another free revision resource found in my shop (circuits, current and potential difference revision). A simple practical is included where students investigate the indentation of weights within sand when applied on a different numbers of supports. A full differentiated lesson based on the activate 2 (P3.3) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers pressure in gases and the effects of volume and temperature. Student understanding is checked with a differentiated question grid challenge. Atmospheric pressure is introduced ahead on the 'crushing can' demonstration - very easy; a can, water, tongues and bunsen burner is required (youtube for demo). Students then reorder statements to explain their observations. The effect of altitude on gas pressure is then discussed with use of examples. The plenary is an 'articulate' activity where students make logical and scientific speeches making use of key words from the lesson. Those with the most key words used can be given a reward. This lesson includes all answers for self/peer assessment and no additional worksheets are required. The use of animation and the choice of topics to explain each theory were chosen with an emphasis on promoting a love of learning. Timers are included to promote pace.

A full lesson based on the Activate 2 (P3.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson covers the units of speed, how to calculate speed, distance and time. Student understanding is checked with a simple calculation table and answers are peer/self assessed. The lesson then moves onto averages speed vs. instantaneous speed and relative motion. A differentiated question grid challenge is then used to apply learning and facilitate AFL for peer/self marking. The practical activity involves students calculating the speed of a toy car down a ramp, which can be divided into 5 sections to facilitate the calculation of instantaneous speed within each section. The plenary is based on the students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.

A full lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.6) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers fossil fuels, power plants and alternative energy sources using a range of activities. All answers are incorporated into the slides facilitating peer/self marking and timers are used to promote pace. The information hunt and the worksheet activity are taken from other TES authors. The plenary is an exciting 'car race quiz' where students are put into groups and compete the reach the finish line first, pre-prepared questions/answers included. I usually take the answer from the group to put their hand up first, those who answer incorrectly are frozen out until the next round. A reflective plenary is also included as a back up in case the lesson progresses faster than expected. A complete, differentiated lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.5 ) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson covers the key aspects of infrared radiation, thermal imaging and the use of foil blankets etc. Student understanding is checked with a differentiated question grid challenge (answers included) prior to a simple practical. For the practical hot water bottles with different covers, different coloured cups ice or heat packs can be used. Students will use a thermometer to record the temperature of each object and then judge how much infrared radiation is given off using the back of their hands. An alternative simple prac is included where students monitor the temperature of black and silver cans containing hot water. This is followed by 'stretch questions' associated with the practical and a plenary designed to encourage self reflection within students in regards to their progress against the learning objectives.

This is a full lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.3) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers thermometers, differentiating between energy and temperature, particle diagrams and thermal energy, and the transfer of energy. Student understanding is assessed with a differentiated question grid challenge. There is then a simple practical activity where students observe and record what occurs when solids, liquids and gases are heated in warm water - gas syringes, petroleum jelly, ice, test tubes, thermometers and beakers are required. Students then complete 5 questions projected on the board which relate to the practical activity. The plenary is based upon students reflecting on their progress against the learning objectives.

This lesson is based on the Activate 2 (P2.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers the law of conservation of energy, different energy stores, energy transfer and dissipation. Learning is assessed at 3 stages using think pair and share, an energy store match up, and a 4 mark question to answer. Students are scaffolded up to each task, and answers are included to allow self/peer assessment. The practical activity involves 6 small experiments that the students must visit, observe energy transfers and explain their observations within a table. Extension questions are included for those who finish early, again the answers are included within the slides. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.

A full differentiated lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson introduces the Joule and how to calculate kJ's. Energy in different food products are compared by the students with questions and a DART activity to check for understanding. The energy requirements of different activities are then compared prior to a discussion on the balance of energy. Students then take part in a 'beat the grid' challenge answering as many differentiated questions as they can within 10 minutes. A worksheet exercise then takes place to apply and reinforce knowledge based on the content of the lesson. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. This lesson includes timers and animation to promote pace, and all answers are included in the slides to facilitate self/peer marking. This lesson also promotes the correct use of literacy and numeracy through the activities included.

A complete lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.8) SOW but can be used for others. Students are introduced to the uses of electromagnets with examples, video is used to incite their interest further. An introduction to motors is included (a demonstration is useful here). Students then take part in an information hunt to apply and reinforce their learning - answers included. Using Ipads students then conduct independent research on recycling and electromagnets, producing a leaflet which can be judged by peers. Students then take part in a Kahoot quiz on the topic of electromagnets (free log in and Ipads required). The plenary consists of students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, a soft toy can be thrown around to elect who reads out their answer. HW sheet and info hunt taken from TES. This can be a very fun and engaging lesson in a well managed class! This lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.4) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson begins with the structure of the ear, and how we hear. Students complete their handout of the ear as you progress through the first few slides prior to a summary and correction of answers. There is then a 'gap fill' DART activity to check for understanding. The lesson then progresses to damage of hearing and how we measure sound (dB). The microphone is then compared to the ear, students must then answer a 'focus writing' task where they use their knowledge from the lesson to compare and contrast the ear and the microphone. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and sharing their answers with peers - throwing round a soft toy is a fun way of doing this. All answers/animations/timers included within the slides.

The lesson includes the making of electromagnets, increasing the strength of electromagnets and differentiates between permanent and electromagnets. A practical demonstration and a fun think pair and share session are included to maintain student focus. Students attempt a focus mark question based on the content of the lesson and peer assess - this can be used for focus marking. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and how they can improve. No additional worksheets required, answers incorporated into the slides for written activities.

Students then attempt calculations and can 'stretch' to rearrange the equation to calculate p.d and current. Conductors and insulators are then introduced ahead of a practical exercise where students calculate resistance from a series of p.d. and current measurements.
