Density Introduction - A Conceptual Understanding

(0)
My Class 6’s and 7’s every year love this lesson and yours will too! Density is an important concept. For students to truly understand the meaning of density and to compare objects and substances of differing density they must have a strong conceptual understanding. This lesson is aimed at introducing students to the concept of density in a fun way in order to prepare them for future lessons that involve objects that float/sink and calculations. In this lesson students will have to show a true understanding of the definitions of mass, volume and density in order to correctly answer questions involving particle models. Students will have to critically think in order to draw their own particle models comparing two liquids of differing density. Students will also have the opportunity to perform two fun labs where they stack liquids of differing density and drop objects of differing density into measuring cylinders. Before they can perform the labs, the students must independently order the liquids and draw particle diagrams to represent the particles in each liquid layer. A fun challenge is set at the end for students to perform at home if they desire. Lesson plan can be found at the end of the student worksheet. Presentation can be downloaded in either powerpoint or keynote.
