The Breadwinner, a children's novel by Deborah Ellis is about an 11-year-old girl named Parvana. She is forced by circumstances to be the breadwinner for her family in a war-torn Taliban-era in Afghanistan. While reading the novel, have a class discussion on how girls and women are treated differently than boys and men. Then have the students complete the comic strip assignment sheet, that will show that girls and women should be given the same freedom as boys and men. After completing the novel, have your students complete the poster assignment. A poster rubric is included. As an extension, have the students present the poster to their classmates. A great assessment tool for Novel Study and Media Literacy as well! The Book report can be used as a quick assessment. It contains short activities that deal with the settings, characters, plot and themes. Students will also have the opportunity to design a new cover for the novel and give it a new title. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a children's novel written by Roald Dahl. At night, Mr. Fox steals chickens, ducks, and turkeys from three mean and wealthy farmers. The farmers try to get back at him, however, Mr. Fox outwits them. Use the vocabulary to introduce each of the 18 chapters. Students can locate the words in the dictionary prior to reading each chapter. Students can find the meaning and part of speech. This exercise will assist students to better understand the content of each chapter. A word sort sheet is provided for the students. The One and Only Ivan is a children's book by Katherine Applegate. After reading the novel, have the students summarize the setting, characters, plot and one of the themes. The students will also have the opportunity to choose another title for the novel and write sentences using some of the vocabulary. Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is an amazing novel about a middle school girl who feels that she somehow can't fit in. Her new teacher, Mr. Daniels, finally uncovers the full extent of Ally’s problem. Students will recap the main setting, main character, plot, themes and complete some vocabulary activities. Albert Einstein's quote will be analyzed by the students as well. Students will have the opportunity to redesign the book cover, ask questions about dyslexia and summarize the main character and book using the acrostic templates, "Ally Nickerson" and "Fish in a Tree". A great way to incorporate Christmas, Christmas symbols and adjectives. This fun activity can be used with a whole class, while brainstorming or individually in centers.
