Information includes an introduction into some of the types of surgery carried out in Islamic hospitals and the ideas of hygiene advocated by Razes. There is an introduction too into the development of pharmacies and hospitals. It is intended as an introduction and a spark into some of the advances made in Baghdad at the time and ends with a general question into what conclusions can be made. It should be used in conjunction with closer studies into Baghdad hospitals, Islamic pharmacies and medical ideas.

Investigate the trouble between Thomas Becket and Henry II through evidence in the form of witness statements into the death. Groups can look at the possible statements given by individuals about the rift. Each one gives clues, but when all clues are put together they create a full picture. Use alongside other text book information to fill in extra details or answer questions posed by the activity. There is lots of scope for drama activities or even a court scene scenario. Included are 3 differentiated tasks at the end which ask pupils to create and justify their opinion. The activity encourages pupils to investigate information and for independent conclusions.

Two activities that encourage historical and independent thinking about slave resistance - one for pupils to think from a slave perspective - the second to encourage the use of questions. The activity based on developing pupil questioning could also be used as a way to begin looking at sources and to demonstrate how a historian uses questions to help form conclusions. Further activities could include looking at a variety of differentiated sources on slave life on the plantations. Follow the steps on the mats to come to a historical conclusion which can then be self evaluated.
