This Key Stage 3/4 resource is part of the JACOSA scheme. This story based learning project provides students with a compelling learning experience that is designed to put learning into context. The PP is often used at the beginning of lessons to excite learning. Teachers can plan lessons around the story. In this project, pupils become Oscar Birbich who works for a new up and coming food and grocery store called Jacosas. Supported by his team, Oscar is given three assignments to complete from his new boss Sebastian Bronzeworthy. In his first assignment, Oscar investigates what type of biscuit is the best for dunking in hot drinks. In his second assignment, he investigates rates of reaction and what makes a good bath bomb and in his third assignment he investigates the amount of energy in different types of crisp. This project is designed to teach pupils to think scientifically and how to plan and carry out science investigations. It is usually used at Key Stage 3 and covers work on energy, healthy eating and chemical reactions.

This is a PowerPoint presentation that is used to support the third context poster of the Forensics Project. This project is part of the JACOSA scheme. Please see my TES shop for additional resources. During this lesson pupils carry out a test on the rat poison and spilt water that was found in Charles Hobbles’ laboratory. They learn about acids and alkalis and how to measure the pH of a substance. The pupils have already been taught how to use the chemicals and measuring equipment in their kit. Please download lesson 2 resources from TES website. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce chemistry and simple experiments to a class of pupils who are new to working in a lab. There should be a particular focus on working safely and carefully. All context posters for this project and a practical licence have been included in this bundle for free.

These resources support the fourth context poster of the Forensics Project, which is part of the JACOSA scheme. Charles Hobbles has been found dead in his laboratory. Footprints of a mysterious white powder have been found at the crime scene. Can a team of young forensic scientists work out what the mystery white powder is and pin the crime on a suspect? The team will need to carry out a fair test investigation to find out. You will receive a PowerPoint presentation and a bank of resources that support the lesson. The context posters for this project have been added to this bundle for free.

This Key Stage 3/4 resource is part of the JACOSA scheme. It is used to teach pupils the science concepts of elements, compounds and mixtures. This story based learning project provides students with a compelling learning experience that is designed to put learning into context. The context posters, which are included in the PP, are often used at the beginning of lessons to excite learning. Teachers can plan lessons around the story. In this project, pupils need to escape from Puzzle Island by solving puzzles and thinking scientifically. Hidden on the island are different objects. Pupils can click on each object to find out what element it’s made from and what its chemical symbol is. In this lesson of the project, pupils have to complete the missing parts of a periodic table. This is a 12 lesson unit, but additional lesson can be added if the teacher chooses to. Use the notes and professor Element to help you navigate your way around the island.

This Key Stage 3 resource is part of the JACOSA scheme. It covers the structure of the Earth and the formation of different types of rock. This story based learning project provides students with a compelling learning experience that is designed to put learning into context. The posters are often used at the beginning of lessons to excite learning. Teachers can plan lessons around the story. This is a team based and self managing learning project and is appropriate for a top set key stage 3 class who are learning about rocks. Divide your class into groups of 5 and assign each group member to a job. The skills required to do each job are outlined in the PowerPoint presentation. You can either encourage each group to assign roles themselves or assign the roles yourself, this will obviously depend on the class. The pupils in each team then work together to create 4 textbook pages on rocks. It is really up to you what resources you provide each group with and how long to give them (the time frame can easily be changed on the PP). A laptop computer, various textbooks and encyclopaedias, posters on rocks, labelled diagrams are usually given to each group, but some teachers also provide a teacher session, this being a part of the classroom that the pupils can go to gain information from their teacher at certain agreed times. This project obviously is designed to help pupils find things out for themselves and then apply what they have learned. In the second task, the teams have to plan a three part lesson, which incorporates the use of the textbook that they created in the first task. There is an alternative version of this project that covers a unit on Earth and space. These projects are often used at the end of term:o)

In this story Logan Woodhouse’ sister has been badly burned in a science experiment and he is determined to find out how it happened. After breaking into the school laboratory he starts to investigate what happened to her. This resource is intended to be used when students are introduced to a lab for the first time. It covers: lab and Bunsen burner safety and drawing science diagrams. The forth context poster is on following instructions and is not part of the Logan Woodhouse case, but is often used immediately after the case has been completed.

In this project, Charles Hobbles has been found dead in his laboratory and a young team of investigators are trying to find out what happened to him. In the first part of the project, the team of investigators are trained on how to use the contents of their kit bag. During the second part of the project, pupils investigate some spillt water and a mystery white powder that were discovered at the crime scene. In the final part of the project, the investigators use data to find out if the truth serum, which Charles Hobbles had invented, actually worked or not.

This story based learning project provides students with a compelling learning experience that is designed to put learning into context. The posters are often used at the beginning of lessons to excite learning. Teachers can plan lessons around the story. In this lesson, Grant attends Charles Brook High School for the first time and meets a girl called Michelle who he really likes in a science lesson taught by Mr. Goddard. The class just happens to be learning about the compound microscope. The finding out task is a reciprocal teaching activity and the application task, often used as a homework, is an entry from Robert Hooke’s personal diary back in 1672. I have attached a stretch activity to this bundle that can be used to help pupils achieve the mastery objective.

In this lesson pupils look at the system of labelling hazardous chemicals in science. The PowerPoint includes 6 slides, which can be used as posters to introduce pupils to the different symbols. During the lesson pupils play a card game using the labelling cards and then apply their learning by thinking about how to control the risks of different chemicals when they are being used in the laboratory.
Science Licence

Science Licence

(0)
This is a practical licence that is used to support good behaviour in science during practical lessons. Pupils get points put on their licence for not working safely during a science practical lesson. If pupils lose their licence, for getting 5 points on it, they either have to work with a TA, teacher or have to do some theory work during practical lessons until the teacher feels that they can be given a new licence.
