Identifying language features in text

(3)
To be used alongside a piece of text to allow learners to identify specific language features. I have used this successfully with my lower ability GCSE English Language students to help them identify language features within the text as exam practice. The scaffolded worksheet can be amended by the tutor to include some of the language features that are within the source/text to prompt the less able learners to find examples.

Group Task – Hand out the cards with different ‘ways to assess’ on. Students to stick them on the whiteboard under the headings ‘effective’ or ‘ineffective’. Open Questions: • Does everyone agree with each other’s choice of heading? • Did the students group the more ‘common’ assessment types under ‘effective’? Question their groupings – Are their choices more effective or are they the assessments the students are more familiar with?

‘Describe me’ activity – Split learners into pairs and provide one learner with a ‘describe me card’, they must describe the object on their card to their partner without saying explicitly what the object is. The other learner must guess what the object is. Demonstrate the activity with a learner to ensure everyone understands the task.
