About Our Lady and St John Catholic College
Our Lady & St John Catholic College was opened in 1987, following the amalgamation of two Blackburn Catholic High Schools and is partnered with : Holy Souls, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, St Alban’s, St Anne’s, St Antony’s and St Mary & St Joseph Primary Schools.
Situated on the south-eastern outskirts of Blackburn, Our Lady & St John, commands impressive views over the town and nearby countryside. The school has excellent standards of decoration and upkeep, is well-resourced and equipped with many state of the art facilities; a brand new drama and dance studio was opened in the summer of 2005.
Impressive public examination results means that academically the school is held in high esteem. Success in a wide range of extra curricular activities complements the academic success. As a result, the school is widely acclaimed and so each year the number of applications for entry far exceeds the number of places available.
The school has received many prestigious accolades in recent years. In September 2002 the school gained Arts College status. In recognition of the school’s good reputation for collaboration and helping to raise standards, the school was acknowledged as a ‘Beacon’ School in 2003 and later a ‘Leading Edge’ school. Other awards include : the quality Standard Award for Careers, Basic Skills Agency Secondary Quality Mark, Sports Mark and the Gold Arts Award Mark. The 2005 report from OFSTED Inspectors stated, “The progress that pupils make by the end of Year 11, when compared to similar schools, places Our Lady & St John in the top 10% nationally” and that, “ . . . support for pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is outstanding” – a reflection of the school’s commitment to the “Every Child Matters” Agenda.
Prime Minister, Tony Blair, after his visit to Our Lady & St John, wrote, “It really is a splendid school and its excellent record is clearly well-deserved.”
In June, 2006, Our Lady & St John was identified by DfES as a high performing school and invited to apply for a Second Specialism. We have now succeeded in securing Vocational Second Specialism.
The school aims to be a caring Catholic community, centred on Christ, aiming for excellence in all that it does. It strives to nurture in all a knowledge and love of the faith and to develop living examples of its patron Saints – Our Lady & St John.
