Bar at the Folies-Bergere Painting: The perspective is faulty from the reflection in the mirror at the Folies-Bergere. Manet did not make a mistake in painting the distortion. Rather, he was intrigued by the concept of artifice versus reality.
This is his last masterpiece, painted two years before his death from complications of syphilis. He is 49 and seems well aware of losing his health battle. His next two years of painting are laid out in front of us on the bar. They are all still lifes because that is all he will be able to manage to paint.
He captures the sad eyed girl behind the bar who does not want to interact with the viewer-customer. She is yet another female who is likely considered little more than a prostitute just by her working at the Folies. Is she being propositioned by the man before her? It is very likely. She seems to have seen and heard it all.
Although this is a fashionable place with a lively crowd, the effect is melancholy, not exuberant.
