This Grade 2 STEM Full-Year Curriculum provides 36 weeks of hands-on engineering, science, problem solving, data analysis, and unplugged coding activities. Organized into six sequenced units, it helps students become confident STEM problem solvers while making year-long planning easier for teachers.
The six units focus on Engineering Design, Matter & Materials, Forces & Motion, Living Systems, Earth & Weather, and Human Solutions. Each week features a complete STEM challenge using a consistent engineering process: Ask → Imagine → Plan → Build → Test → Improve. Students define problems, develop solutions, build models, conduct repeated trials, analyze evidence, and improve their designs.
The curriculum includes 36 weekly challenges, 15 data investigations, 15 unplugged coding activities, six unit projects, a 36-week pacing guide, materials lists, preparation guidance, and editable standards alignment tables. Activities incorporate measurement, comparison, graphing, data collection, and evidence-based decision making.
Each challenge is designed around five classroom sessions of approximately 45–60 minutes, with flexible options for classrooms with fewer STEM blocks. Students can work independently, with partners, or in teams while explaining their thinking and supporting conclusions with evidence.
The program aligns with NGSS K–2 Engineering Design standards, including K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, and K-2-ETS1-3, as well as relevant CCSS Math and ELA standards. Students develop skills in measurement, operations, geometry, graphing, speaking, listening, informational writing, collaboration, and research.
Challenges use common classroom or recycled materials and include engaging topics such as bridges, marble runs, parachutes, water filters, habitats, weather shelters, simple machines, and more.
By following the same engineering routine throughout the year, students develop stronger planning, testing, data analysis, communication, and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, they learn that successful engineering involves using evidence to improve a design rather than simply starting over.
This resource provides a structured, engaging, and interdisciplinary STEM program for Grade 2 while significantly reducing teacher preparation and planning time.

Kindergarten runs a simpler four-step routine in shorter sessions. Every challenge has a driving question, criteria, constraints, and a prediction before building; from 2nd Grade up, required trial counts and data to record; from 4th up, a client scenario and a budget. How It Grows, K–5 K: count, compare, build, and try again — Ask · Imagine · Build · Share 1st: change one thing and test again; measure in cm; simple data 2nd: three ideas before choosing; repeated trials; graphs; numbers as evidence 3rd: independent/dependent/controlled variables; fair tests; efficiency; claim–evidence–reasoning; unplugged coding 4th: measurable criteria; budgets and cost per unit; weighted decision matrices; source reliability 5th: trade-offs and optimization; ratios and rates; technical summaries; flowcharts and pseudocode By Week 36 of 5th Grade, students independently define a problem, research it, run the full engineering process, and report a recommendation someone could act on. Format 6 PDF files, 1,074 pages total Teacher-facing lesson plans; print-and-go All challenges use everyday classroom supplies — cups, straws, tape, paper, string, blocks — with a materials list for every challenge and no kit required Teaching duration: 1 full school year per grade Build Out From Here Each curriculum has six companion resources, all built on the same 36-week sequence and unit colors: K–5 STEM Challenge Cards — the student-facing card for every weekly challenge, plus Level Up extensions and Quick Builds K–5 STEM Journals — the student recording pages for every weekly challenge K–5 STEM Projects — the six unit capstones per grade, extended into full team projects, plus 72 mini-projects K–5 STEM Task Cards — 5–10 minute skill practice with answer keys K–5 STEM for Early Finishers — a self-managing routine for independent time K–5 STEM Sub Plans — scripted lessons for absence days All seven, for all six grades, are in the K–5 STEM Mega Bundle.
