The aim of this lesson is to assess the roles of the two main leaders of the Mormons, Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and to examine the story of the Mormon migration west to Salt Lake City.
Students explore the key teachings of the Mormons and consider how the movement became increasingly isolated in the face of hostility and persecution. They examine how these experiences encouraged the Mormons to move west in search of a place where they could practise their religion more freely.
Students have a choice of tasks, including key questions or a storyboard activity which plots the life and leadership of Brigham Young. They then annotate text to analyse the leadership qualities which helped Young guide the Mormons through their migration and settlement.
Students also complete a prioritisation activity and a Planning Thinking Quilt, helping them to assess the reasons why Brigham Young was successful in leading the Mormons west and establishing a settlement at Salt Lake City.
There is GCSE exam practice using the ‘How important was…?’ question, with helpful guidance if required and a model answer provided to support students in developing their exam technique.
A Noughts and Crosses quiz at the end of the lesson provides an engaging way to reinforce the key knowledge and learning.
