Second lesson in AQA Topic C2. Complete PowerPoint with student activities included. This builds on the formation of ions lesson C2.1 and explores how ionic (electrostatic) bonds produce giant lattice structures. Students practice dot and cross diagrams and observe which atom transfers an electron to another. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to compare the usefulness and limitations of dot and cross diagrams, ball and stick models and 3D model of ionic compounds., as well as finding the empirical formula of an ionic compound and how the charges on the ions help them to do this. This lesson focuses on ensuring students understand the structure of NaCl and other ionic compounds.
The lesson has a mixture of direct teaching, student recall, literacy task, quick quizzes.
