Bayeux Tapestry & Norman Conquest: KS3 Reading Comprehension

Explore the Bayeux Tapestry, Battle of Hastings and Norman Conquest of 1066 with this illustrated KS3 history reading comprehension resource for Years 7–8. Includes a nonfiction text, differentiated comprehension worksheets and primary source analysis activities.

The approximately 900-word, two-page information text follows the struggle for England’s throne in 1066. Pupils compare the claims of Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy and Harald Hardrada, explore invasion preparations and battlefield tactics, and consider the Norman Conquest’s lasting effects on England.

The reading also examines the Bayeux Tapestry as a medieval primary source. Pupils discover how embroidered pictures and Latin captions communicate events, what they reveal about medieval warfare and society, and how possible bias, omissions and disputed details affect historical interpretation.
