This worksheet provides an interactive exercise to aide A-Level or AS Film or Media Studies students to reflect upon the film’s messages and values, and how these are presented in the film through Ben’s parenting methods.

Students will be encouraged to think about what makes a ‘good’ parent and then apply a set of ‘parenting criteria’ to Ben Cash, the film’s main protagonist, who is the single father of six children.

This exercise allows students to think independently, to make strong links between ideological arguments and representations within the text. This provides opportunities for further discussions and comparisons of students assessments of Ben’s parenting skills (or lack thereof).

There is an extension exercise that can stretch more gifted and able students to build upon the worksheet and practice essay writing skills.

This resource is especially relevant to those teaching the EDUQAS FILM STUDIES A LEVEL Component 1B. Spectatorship curriculum.
