Cold Environments: Managing Cold Environments

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unit 1B: In this seventh lesson of the Cold Environments section we look at the strategies that may be used to manage cold environments and how climate change may make managing the more difficult in the future.

There is a multiple choice retrieval practice starter based on the content delivered in the previous lessons. We begin with an exercise designed to get the students to think about balancing economic development with conservation. The students are given a list of activities that take place in cold environments. They need to decide whether they ‘would allow it, allow it with rules, or ban it’. They then explain their decision in their exercise book. We then look at the strategies used to manage cold environments. The students have a ‘describe it, explain it, rate it’ worksheet to fill in based on details provided in some information cards. They then look at the impacts of climate change on another worksheet. In Part 1 they assess the severity of the impacts on cold environments by shading in thermometers and then in part 2 consider whether any of the strategies discussed earlier may help. In part 3 they reach a final conclusion whether Arctic management strategies will fail, partly succeed, or succeed. They justify this.
We finish with 9-mark GCSE-style question based on the content of the lesson and the students have some exam tips and guidance on how to answer it if required.
