Colourful Semantics WHAT DOING Pack | Level 2

Help autistic and neurodiverse learners understand and communicate what someone is doing with this practical, visual Level 2 Colourful Semantics teaching pack.

The WHAT DOING layer builds on learners’ understanding of WHO, helping them connect a person or character with an action and begin developing simple sentence structures such as:

WHO + WHAT DOING
The boy + is kicking.

Designed for SEN/SEND teachers, teaching assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Early Years practitioners and autism specialist settings, this resource prioritises meaningful communication, real experiences, adult modelling and visual support rather than simply asking learners to name verbs from pictures.

What’s Included?

This printable pack includes teaching guidance, WHAT DOING visual supports, action resources and structured activities to help learners practise the connection between WHO and WHAT DOING.

The resources support a gradual progression from experiencing and modelling actions through to making choices, completing sentences, responding to questions and communicating more independently.

A Meaningful Approach to Teaching Actions

Whenever possible, introduce WHAT DOING through real actions and everyday experiences. Model actions during play, movement, classroom routines and shared activities, then use photographs, symbols and sentence-building resources to reinforce the connection.

Learners can communicate using speech, AAC, signing, gesture, pointing or another communication method. The focus is on helping learners understand and communicate meaningful messages, not on producing a particular response.

Flexible for Classroom or Intervention Use

Use the pack for individual teaching, small-group intervention, classroom activities and everyday communication opportunities. It can be adapted for learners working at different communication levels and revisited across familiar routines and experiences.

This Level 2 pack is part of the Colourful Semantics sentence-building sequence, helping learners move from understanding WHO towards combining people and actions before introducing additional sentence information at later levels.

Created by Alison Garza, Specialist Teacher and founder of Elevating Neurodiversity, drawing on almost 20 years of experience in education and specialist practice supporting autistic learners.
