A free KS3 micro:bit programming lesson introducing students to inputs and outputs through practical activities and structured PRIMM-style teaching.

This resource contains the first lesson from the full KS3 micro:bit Programming Scheme of Work and is designed to give teachers a clear sample of the structure, teaching style and level of challenge used throughout the complete unit.

The lesson introduces students to inputs and outputs, helping them understand how a program can receive information from an input and use this to control an output on the BBC micro:bit.

Included in this free sample:
• A complete lesson slide deck
• Lesson activities
• Homework
• Sample micro:bit files
• Practical programming tasks

The lesson is structured using the PRIMM approach — Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify and Make — encouraging students to explore and understand existing programs before adapting them and creating their own solutions.

This lesson is particularly suitable for KS3 Computing or Computer Science, including students who are new to programming or physical computing.

It can be used as:
• An introduction to the BBC micro:bit
• A first lesson on inputs and outputs
• A practical KS3 programming lesson
• A PRIMM-based introduction to physical computing
• A sample of the complete micro:bit Programming Scheme of Work

This free resource is taken from the complete 5-lesson KS3 micro:bit Programming Scheme of Work, which goes on to cover inputs and outputs, selection, variables, iteration and subroutines, as well as an end-of-unit assessment.

The full scheme also includes slide decks, lesson activities, homework and sample micro:bit files for every lesson.
