Cereal Snack Bar is a Design Technology unit of work aimed primarily at children aged 7-9. The unit focuses on children designing and making healthy cereal bars and also understanding the importance of eating breakfast regularly.
Design Brief: Design and Make a Healthy Cereal Snack Bar
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
In this unt of work, children create their own recipe, branding, and packaging for a healthy cereal bar snack. Children have the opportunity to investigate and taste test existing cereal bar products and know how they are packaged and labelled. Having learnt about existing cereal bars and the origins of some of their ingredients, children use the Eatwell Guide to design and make a healthy cereal bar. Key learning as part of this unit of work is learning about breakfast and the importance of eating breakfast daily.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following six sessions:
- Investigate 1 – All About Breakfast
- Investigate 2 - Taste Test Cereal Bars
- Focus Task 1 - Making a Cereal Bar & Investigate 3 – Investigating Cereal Bars
- Design & Make - Designing the Cereal Bar
- Design & Make - Making the Cereal Bar
- Evaluation- Evaluating and advertising the Cereal Bar
Some activities / sessions can be re-arranged or delivered in different ways in the learning sequence to allow for whole-class teaching and/or small adult-led sessions to take place at the same time.
