Workshop: Effective Strategies for Learning (Retrieval Practice)

Audience: Secondary Teachers

Length: Approximately 45 minutes

Outline of the session:
Based on evidence from cognitive psychology research, and the impact of this on her own classroom practice, Helen Webb introduces a range of strategies for effective learning. Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss how specific learning strategies, such as retrieval practice, can be adapted and differentiated for effective use in the classroom. Helen Webb also also links these ideas to how we can teach students to use their revision guides more effectively at home.

Expected Outcomes:
Teachers will have a better understanding on which strategies for learning are effective and which are not. Teachers will gain a range of ideas on how to introduce and teach these ideas to students in their own classroom so that students can improve their independent learning at home and ultimately improve the progress they make.

Note from Helen: I have included my own facilitator notes as this workshop is based on a project I did myself. Individual staff may find this presentation and its contents useful for their own CPD or this can be adapted and be ran as a workshop in your own school or college.
