Engineering and Physical Design STEM Challenges
A simple, hands‑on STEM bundle for early primary learners. This set includes six engineering and physical science activities using easy‑to‑find materials. Five challenges use the 9‑Point Engineering Graph for comparing two designs, and one uses a 4‑Point Observation Graph for early science recording. Each activity follows a clean, kid‑friendly layout designed for real classrooms.
ACTIVITIES INCLUDED:
• Build a Bridge (9‑Point Engineering Challenge)
• Paper Tower (9‑Point Engineering Challenge)
• Aluminium Foil Boat (9‑Point Engineering Challenge)
• Ramp and Roll (4‑Point Observation Activity)
• Paper Aeroplanes (9‑Point Engineering Challenge)
• Straw Rocket (9‑Point Engineering Challenge)
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
• Six 3‑page STEM Challenge sets (Cover, Instructions, Activity Page)
• 9‑Point Engineering Graphs (5 activities)
• 4‑Point Observation Graph (Ramp and Roll)
• Clear, consistent directions
• Printable PDFs (A4/Letter compatible)
MATERIALS NEEDED (BY ACTIVITY):
Build a Bridge:
Craft sticks, cardboard or paper, tape or glue, cups or blocks, coins or small objects, scissors (optional)
Paper Tower:
Printer paper or construction paper, tape, scissors
Aluminium Foil Boat:
Aluminium foil, coins, bowl or container of water
Ramp and Roll:
Cardboard, books or blocks, small ball, tape, ruler
Paper Aeroplanes:
Paper, ruler or tape measure
Straw Rocket:
Drinking straw, paper, tape, scissors, ruler
TEACHER BENEFITS:
• Low‑prep activities using simple materials
• Consistent layout across all six challenges
• Supports independent exploration and problem‑solving
• Flexible for whole‑class lessons, small groups, or STEM centres
LEARNING CONCEPTS:
• Engineering design process
• Planning, sketching, and comparing two designs
• Testing and recording performance
• Force, motion, stability, and simple physical science
• Early data collection and observation
HOW IT WORKS:
Students read the prompt, plan their design, build, test, and record results using the included graph. Younger learners create simple builds, while older learners extend and refine their designs.
PRINTING & PREP:
• Print pages single‑sided
• Provide simple classroom materials
• Set up a clear space for building and testing
• Adult supervision required for height, motion, or small‑object activities
AGE RANGE:
Ages 5–11 (Primary)
Aligned for KS1 learners, with natural extension options for KS2.
PERFECT FOR:
• STEM centres
• Early finishers
• Makerspace stations
• After‑school clubs
• Classroom engineering challenges
• Home learning
FILE DETAILS:
• PDF format (non‑editable)
• Instant digital download
• No physical item shipped
