The Freedom Riders – Differentiated Informational Texts & Comprehension Activities (KS2–KS3)
Teach the Freedom Rides of 1961 with two carefully leveled nonfiction texts and a full comprehension and assessment pack for Years 6–9. This resource pairs differentiated reading with activities that build historical understanding, civic literacy, and reading skills.
Students explore the gap between federal law and reality in the Jim Crow South, the strategic logic of nonviolent protest, the violence riders faced in Alabama, and the federal desegregation ruling their campaign ultimately forced.
Two Differentiated Reading Levels (Same Content, Adjusted Complexity)
Lower Level (Years 6–8 | ≈ 850L–950L)
Shorter sentences and direct language make complex historical concepts accessible while preserving the full depth of the story.
Higher Level (Years 8–9 | ≈ 1050L–1150L)
Complex sentence structures and higher-level vocabulary support deeper comprehension, close reading, and analytical discussion.
Both texts cover identical content, making differentiation seamless across ability levels.
