GCSE Biology - Classification Topic Bundle

This bundle consists of three lessons which cover the GCSE biology topic “Classification” (AQA GCSE Biology - 4.6.4 Classification of living organisms)

In this topic students learn about the Linnaean and Binomial classification systems, the addition of the three domains, and what evolutionary trees are and how to read them.

This topic is relevant and suitable for students studying AQA GCSE Biology and AQA GCSE Combined Science.

Lesson objectives:

• Describe the Linnaean system and Binomial system for classifying living things
• Explain why scientists use the Binomial and Linnaean naming systems
• Identify the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus or species of an organism from given diagrams, tables or graphs, or from a binomial name
• Outline the three-domain system
• Explain how evidence led to development of the three-domain system
• Compare the three-domain system to the Linnaean system
• State what an evolutionary tree and a common ancestor are
• Read simple information from an evolutionary tree
• Draw conclusions from an evolutionary tree
