This scheme of work covers a range of dynamic and interesting topics within a broader context of conflict including a fully resourced scheme of work, with challenge tasks and a concluding assessment. This SOW has been created for a Y9 cohort due to the themes of the unit.

Topic 1 - The cocaine industry - this topic introduces the cocaine industry, the winners and losers, conflicts that have arisen due to the industry and Colombia and Pablo Escobar as a case study.

Topic 2 - Blood diamonds - this topic looks at what blood diamonds are and the impacts they have on their environment and people. We then look into the conflicts that have been caused due to diamond mining, as well as various case studies of African countries involved in the trading of blood diamonds.

Topic 3 - Terrorism and 9/11 - this topic illustrates what terrorism is, as well as examples of terrorism that the UK has seen (the Birmingham pub bombings and the Manchester arena bombing), as well as terrorism outside of the UK (in the Sahel). Finally the topic introduces the 9/11 attacks as a case study and enable students to investigate further into the attacks in a structured manner.

Assessment - the assessment includes two longer answer, decision making tasks based on topics 1 & 2.
