Serial Killer H.H. Holmes was America’s first such killer. He murdered in Chicago in the late 1800s. He was in full swing during the Chicago World’s Fair or 1893 which attracted swarms of young women from around America. Holmes graduated from the U of Michigan’s Medical School prior to moving to Chicago. There he developed a business in cadavers which he continued in Chicago, along with just outright murder. He built his own huge Murder Castle, looking like a Hotel, to advance these interests. He also added insurance scams to this criminal mix.

Holmes was popularized in Erik Larsen’s book, The Devil in the White City.

The author is a retired lawyer, instructor and textbook writer.
