Key Stage 3 & 4 Remembrance Day Assembly
This reflective Remembrance Day assembly, Why We Remember, helps students understand the significance of remembering those who have served, sacrificed, and suffered in conflict. Designed for Key Stage 3 and 4 students, the assembly explores the history and meaning of Remembrance Day, moving beyond the wearing of poppies to consider the human stories behind war and conflict.
Students will learn about the origins of Remembrance Day following the First World War, the symbolism of the poppy, and the importance of the two-minute silence. Through personal accounts, images, and moments of reflection, the assembly encourages young people to consider the experiences of servicemen and women, civilians, families, and communities affected by war, both historically and in more recent times.
The assembly also highlights key values such as courage, sacrifice, resilience, respect, and peace. Students are encouraged to reflect on why remembrance remains important today, how lessons from the past can shape the future, and the role they play in promoting understanding, tolerance, and peace within their own communities.
By the end of the assembly, students will have a deeper appreciation of the significance of remembrance and an understanding that remembering is not only about honouring the past, but also about learning from it to help create a better future.
