Lesson - Understanding Algebra Notation

Lesson slides and worksheet for introducing algebraic notation aimed at year 7 pupils.

Structure:

• Starter task and answers
• Paired discussion task where pupils identify which number operation is being described by given words and phrases
• Examples of writing algebraic expressions from worded descriptions, simple to start with followed by some more complex ones
• Worksheet to be printed and completed, answers included

Examples are given in I do/We do/You do format - the we dos are intended for either paired discussion or teacher led questioning and the you dos should be completed by pupils independently (preferably one at a time with mini whiteboards for formative assessment).
