A maths code breaker for Years 3 and 4, built around cracking codes using mental and written calculation across all four operations. This is perfect as a one-off lesson at the end of term or end of year, or for a cover lesson.

Pupils work through a sequence of clues to unlock three padlock codes before tackling a final code using formal written methods, times tables and related division facts.

Three levels of differentiation run throughout, making it workable across mixed-ability classes without additional preparation.

The resource opens with a PowerPoint warm-up, a practice code breaker and a spot-the-mistake task. There are three challenges available for children who finish early.
