Place Value & Decimals | Multi-Lesson Project | Game Developer Scenario

This multi-lesson project allows students to practice their knowledge and skills related to place value and decimals:

Number and Place Value

• Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000 and determine the value of each digit.
• Round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy.
• Solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above.

Decimals

• Identify the value of each digit in numbers given to three decimal places.
• Multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000 giving answers up to three decimal places.
• Multiply one-digit numbers with up to two decimal places by whole numbers.
• Solve problems involving number up to three decimal places.
• Add and subtract decimal numbers.
• Solve problems involving the calculation and conversion of units of measure, using decimal notation up to three decimal places where appropriate.

This project asks students to become game developers! They need to create their own game design, and complete 8 tasks associated with it, while developing their fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Task Breakdown

Setup / Intro: Game Title, Genre, Aim, and Unique Hook creation

Task 1: Download data and device speed performance

Task 2: Going viral!

Task 3: Budget cuts and player depletion

Task 4: Inventory item weights

Task 5: Annual press report data

Task 6: Studio financial review (income, expenses, net profit, and cloud server discount).

Task 7: Real-world merchandise production costs, item weights, and bulk order calculations.

Task 8: International currency exchange rates (Yen to USD, GBP to USD)

This project also comes with an extra level of challenge, the ‘Boss Level’, to provoke higher order reasoning and develop mathematical thinking.
