Help Year 9 pupils turn paired data into accurate scatter graphs and explain their plotting decisions. This editable 87-slide PowerPoint combines table-based teacher modelling, visual mini-whiteboard assessment, independent plotting and differentiated reasoning.
Created by Beyond Printables for Year 9, Unit 25, U199: Plotting Scatter Graphs.
THE MATHEMATICS
Pupils read paired measurements from tables, interpret axis labels and units, use uniform scales and plot each pair accurately. Examples include half-unit intervals, repeated horizontal values, points between gridlines and axes starting above zero. Pupils also correct reversed coordinates, identify plotting errors and explain why the measurements in each pair must stay together.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• Six retrieval questions and answers.
• Six prerequisite questions and explained answers.
• A visual introduction showing how one point represents one pair of measurements.
• Three paired I Do / We Do pages, each with data tables and grids on the same slide.
• Six individual modelled examples with matching plotted answers and explanations.
• A worked example identifying and correcting two plotting errors.
• Twenty individual AFL question-and-answer pairs with visible graphs. Pupils read, choose, correct and explain without having to draw a graph.
• A graph-comparison task with an explained answer.
• Eight plotting data sets presented in compact tables, with plotted answers across two pages.
• Twelve graph-reading and checking questions centred on one labelled scatter graph, with consolidated answers.
• A one-page differentiated plotting task with six data sets across Developing, Secure and Greater Depth, plus a Super Challenge and two answer pages.
• A further one-page differentiated task using a shared graph, with enlarged level options and explained answers.
• A Super Challenge exploring how sorting two columns separately changes data pairs, with an extension.
• Three exit checks with answers.
PRINT-FREE TEACHING
Display the questions and use mini whiteboards for AFL. Pupils use squared exercise books for the plotting tasks, so no worksheets need to be printed. The modelling slides include blank grids for teacher demonstration. Editable tables, text and graphs allow teachers to adapt the lesson and select the activities they need.
