Two weeks of simple refusal data, then a page that helps you find the pattern before the review meeting. “He refuses everything” is not something a SENCo or an educational psychologist can do much with. “He refuses written tasks in period 3, mostly after a supply day, and it stops when he gets a choice of where to start” is. This tracker gets you from one to the other in about five minutes a day. What’s in it (14 pages) Define It First: a one-page definition builder, so every adult counts the same thing A full refusal ABC (antecedent, behaviour, consequence) log, and a quick tick-box version for busy rooms One filled-in example week for a fictional Year 11 pupil, so staff can see what good notes look like Scatterplot, task type and setting event trackers (poor sleep, missed breakfast, supply cover or a timetable change) Pattern Finder and a “Best Guess: Why the No?” worksheet A chart linking the likely reason to strategies to try A team meeting summary and a 4-week progress graph It is not a formal FBA and does not replace your school’s SEND process. It makes that conversation much easier. Please note This is classroom practice, not a behaviour policy. It does not cover restraint, seclusion or physical intervention; follow your school’s behaviour, positive handling and safeguarding policies, and the pupil’s EHCP or behaviour support plan if they have one.
