Sentence Writing Booklet 15 Sentence Structures | Early Writing Support
I’ve put this booklet together to help children who are beginning to write simple sentences but still need support to do so independently.
It covers 15 different sentence structures, with each page following the same format. Children start by looking at and copying a model sentence, then gradually work towards completing sentences, remembering missing words and eventually writing their own.
The idea is to build confidence and independence without expecting children to do everything on their own straight away.
The 15 sentence structures covered are:
- What can you see? – I see a…
- What do you like? – I like…
- What do you have? – I have a…
- What is this? – This is a…
- What is it like? – The ___ is…
- What can it do? – The ___ can…
- What is it doing? – The ___ is…
- What is he doing? – He is…
- What is she doing? – She is…
- What colour is it? – It is a…
- What does it have? – The ___ has a…
- Where is it? – The ___ is on the…
- What is yours like? – My ___ is…
- What can you see? – There is a…
- What do you want to do? – I want to…

The booklet can be used for whole-class sentence-writing practice, small-group work, individual interventions or as a regular independent writing activity.
I’ve tried to keep the structure consistent so that, once children are familiar with the format, they can concentrate more on their writing and less on working out what they’re supposed to do.
The worksheets can also be useful for seeing where children still need support and how their writing develops over time.
