This six-page Spanish activity worksheet introduces students to Cinco de Mayo. It aims to equip students with the vocabulary and structures to talk about the holiday as it is celebrated in Mexico and beyond, as well as wider themes of celebration.
The worksheet begins by introducing some key vocabulary items, before a short, graded text with vocabulary support and comprehension questions.
Further vocabulary activities, including image-matching, multiple choice, gap-fill, and true/false with correction, consolidate and recycle key words and phrases. The worksheet rounds off with an open written exercise, encouraging students to write about their own experiences of local celebrations, comparing them with the Cinco de Mayo festivities.
The language level is around A2 on the CEFR scale (ideal for Year 8/9), with plenty of cognates, designed to encourage gist-reading longer texts. The language is additionally aligned to AQA GCSE Theme 2 (Customs, Festivals and Celebrations) and Edexcel’s cultural thematic contexts. The present and preterite tenses are used predominantly.
Answers to all the vocabulary activities are supplied at the end of the worksheet.
