Hi, I’m a Spanish native speaker and I have been an MFL teacher in the UK for 6 years. We started using Gianfranco Conti’s EPI approach in my school and I made this unit using his MARS EARS method, which my students really enjoy.

This unit is ideal for KS4 (Year 9 or Year 10). It has 16 lessons and it includes 5 sub-units about school, which are roughly based around the VIVA book for AQA GCSE. The sentence builders cover:

  • Qué hay en tu intituto? Hay/No hay + range of facilities and adjectives, as well as an extension with more higher level language (un director, cien alumnos…)
  • Qué reglas hay en tu instituto? With a range of modal verbs and opinions
  • Qué es lo mejor/peor de tus asignaturas? Lo mejor de __ (subject) es/son + range of opinions
  • Profesores and superlative: Mi profesor(a) de ___ es el/la más/menos + range of adjectives
  • Qué el lo que más/menos te gusta hacer? With a range of higher-level infinitive phrases to do with school in general

Each sub-unit applies the full MARS EARS sequence and develops fluency in the 4 skills (with an emphasis in phonics) and go from introducing the vocabulary and grammar to testing the skills. They also include regular homework.

Each lesson includes a variety of engaging activities and are ready to go (from starter activity to plenary/game) or be adapted to your classes. Some activities include: mini white board translations, faulty echo, jumbled up sentences, gapped translation, narrow reading and listening, bad translation, delayed dictation, etc.

At the end of the unit there is a writing assessment for students to write a 90-word question by putting into practice what they have learnt, as well as a writing challenge where students can be more creative and develop fluency. There are also revision materials and a feedback lesson included in the pack.

I have also made a full unit aimed at Foundation-tier students, which you can find in my shop!

I’d really appreciate it if you could leave a review!
