40 maths starter activities with teaching plans and supporting photocopiable card resources in an 87-page PDF for mixed-ability Year 8 classes.
Lively, interactive starters use word games, matching, sorting, investigations and group challenges to reinforce learning across problem-solving, number, calculation, algebra, shape and measures, and handling data. Topics include fractions, percentages, ratio, equations, sequences, Euler’s theorem, bearings, graphs, averages and probability.
Plans identify resources, key vocabulary, learning outcomes, organisation and instructions, with answers and extensions where relevant. Supporting pages provide cards and diagrams for activities that need them; other starters use ordinary classroom materials.
Most starters are intended for about 10–15 minutes and can be adapted into main activities or plenaries. This is the original 2002 publication. Historical National Numeracy Strategy and Framework references are retained without a claim of current curriculum alignment.
