Straw Rocket STEM Challenge

A simple, hands‑on STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve two different straw rockets. Low‑prep, engaging, and ideal for primary classrooms, home learning, STEM tubs, or makerspace stations.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:
• 3‑page STEM Challenge set: Cover Page, Instructions Page, Activity Page
• 9‑Point Engineering Graph for comparing two rocket designs
• Clear, consistent directions for real classrooms
• Kid‑friendly layout for independent exploration
• Printable PDF (A4/Letter compatible)

SKILLS DEVELOPED:
• Engineering design process
• Planning and sketching two rocket designs
• Testing and comparing flight distance
• Understanding force, motion, and simple aerodynamics
• Recording results using a structured 9‑point graph

HOW IT WORKS:
Learners create two different straw rockets by rolling paper tubes, attaching fins, and launching them using a drinking straw. They test each rocket, record how far it travels, and compare the results using the 9‑Point Engineering Graph. The open layout supports drawings, labels, and observations. The challenge naturally scales: younger learners build simple rockets, while older learners experiment with fin shape, nose cones, and tube length to improve flight distance.

LEARNING CONCEPTS:
• Force and motion
• Simple aerodynamics
• Testing and comparing designs
• Recording results using a structured graph
• Improving designs based on test results
Curriculum Links: Supports early engineering, forces, motion, and simple investigations involving flight.
STEM Vocabulary (concepts explored): rocket, launch, force, motion, fins, design, test, improve
Differentiation: Works well for KS1 learners and naturally extends for KS2.
