Subtraction L13 Four in a Row | Signed Integer Subtraction is a printable subtraction game from a structured 26-level progression, designed to build fluency with positive and negative numbers.

This resource gives pupils focused practice in subtracting signed integers. Pupils must interpret positive and negative values correctly, understand the effect of subtracting a negative number and avoid confusing operation signs with number signs.

Pupils answer subtraction questions and try to connect four correct answers, adding motivation and pace to an area in which repeated practice is particularly valuable.

This is one individual level from the wider 26-level Subtraction progression. It extends subtraction beyond positive whole numbers and decimals, preparing pupils for calculations involving three signed terms and later algebraic work.

The rationale behind the progression is that subtraction remains central even when the surrounding notation becomes more demanding. Pupils must preserve signs, interpret the calculation structure and work accurately.

This individual Four in a Row resource is useful for:

starter activities
intervention
retrieval practice
homework
tutoring
cover lessons
paired work
small-group practice
KS3 directed-number practice
GCSE Foundation fluency support

The game format adds engagement, while pupils build secure sign awareness, directed-number understanding and confidence.

This resource is sold individually as one level from the full 26-level Subtraction Four in a Row progression.
