The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the reasons behind the implementation of the Final Solution and assess whether the war in the East was the key turning point in the development of Nazi mass murder.
Students begin by revisiting the chronology of Nazi anti-Semitic policies from 1933 onwards, identifying key turning points that led to the escalation of persecution.
They then investigate the significance of the Wannsee Conference and examine how Nazi officials coordinated policies towards the Jewish population across occupied Europe.
Through a structured comprehension activity and timeline task, students explore the development of the Final Solution, considering the role of ideology, wartime conditions, the invasion of the Soviet Union and the expansion of Nazi control in Eastern Europe.
Students analyse maps showing the locations of concentration camps and extermination camps, developing their understanding of the geographical scale and organisation of the Holocaust.
Case studies on Auschwitz and individual experiences provide important context, allowing students to consider both the systematic nature of Nazi genocide and the human impact of these policies.
The final section of the lesson explores Jewish resistance, including the different forms of opposition and survival strategies used by Jewish communities. Students also investigate the significance of the death marches and evaluate the responsibility of different individuals and organisations for the Holocaust.
Using contemporary and modern sources, students develop their source analysis and interpretation skills before applying their knowledge to A Level exam-style questions. Structured guidance and a focused mark scheme are provided to support analytical and evaluative writing.

**AQA GCE 2O A Level Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918-45** I have produced this bundle of resources on the Nazi racial state and the impact of war 1933-45 to help A Level History students gain a deeper understanding of Nazi Germany’s changing policies during the war years. The enquiry question throughout these lessons will be evaluate the reasons why the Nazis committed mass murder and assess the impact of total war on Germany. Students will learn about the development of anti-Semitic policies and the radicalisation of the state with its social Darwinism and race theories. They will study how the events of the Anschluss, Kristallnacht and the invasion of Poland sparked a sea change in how the Nazi regime reacted towards undesirables, minorities as well as Jewish people. Students will evaluate the effectiveness of propaganda in maintaining morale during the war years and the changing impact of war on Nazi German society such as the appointment of Albert Speer and the mobilisation of the German economy for armaments production. They will also assess how effective opposition was to the Nazi regime and how different groups resisted the totalitarian state. Finally students will analyse the origins of the ‘Final Solution’, the key figures involved and the role of the Einsatzgruppen and extermination camps in Poland.
