Understanding Climate Justice: Rethinking Progress

This lesson is part Climate Education Centre’s module titled “Understanding Climate Justice: Reimagining Our Shared Future”. It is a newly created resource (2026) by the Climate Education Centre made up of 7 lessons for learners 13-18. As a former teacher who recently transitioned into curriculum writing, I know the challenges of finding curriculum that supports teaching climate education beyond the doors of the science classroom. The lessons are grounded in justice, creativity, and interconnectedness, and explores themes like current world systems, sustainable living, and youth-led climate action. It is fully classroom-ready, so the only preparation needed is printing the materials. It aligns with UNESCO’s Greening Education Standards and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In a time where youth are often overwhelmed or anxious about the future and the climate crisis, this curriculum gives them a space to reflect deeply, and develop hope, ethical awareness and courage to navigate a rapidly changing world. UNESCO has found that schools that implement this kind of learning see stronger student engagement, deeper critical thinking, and a more connected, purpose-driven school culture. The aim of this curriculum was to respond to young people’s calls for meaningful climate education while creating resources that make it easier for educators to bring these conversations into their classrooms without adding to already-full workloads.
