This engaging KS3 geography lesson explores the importance of cities through a focused case study of Lagos, Nigeria. Designed to bridge KS3 and GCSE, it introduces students to real-world urbanisation by examining why millions of people migrate to cities in search of opportunities such as jobs, healthcare and education. The lesson combines clear explanations, structured tasks and a carefully selected video to help students develop strong cause-and-effect understanding (e.g. jobs → income → quality of life). It also challenges students to think more deeply by considering whether city life is always better, encouraging evaluation and decision-making. With scaffolded writing frames, case study application and a balance of opportunities and challenges, this lesson supports mixed-ability classes while building key geographical skills and preparing students for GCSE-style thinking.
