This 2 week mini-unit has been a hit every time I’ve taught it!
This unit is aimed at Year 3 students, and can be adapted to suit the needs of your class. I have left everything fully editable as you need to adapt it to your own students but please share within the license boundaries of your purchase.
The unit takes 10 days (2 weeks of English lessons of approximately 45-60 minutes). Week 1 covers ‘features of a narrative’, ‘comprehension’, ‘skill practice’ and ‘planning’. Week 2 is more open ended to allow you to follow the writing and editing expectations of your school. Week 1 could also be adapted for whole-class guided reading if appropriate.

The unit covers:
• Beginning, middle and end using the story mountain framework to extend this into introduction, build up, climax, resolution, conclusion
• Using quotation marks/inverted commas for speech (this does not explicitly teach use of commas within quotation marks as I build this in later in the year, but you could easily add this in)
• Character and setting recap
• Brief exposure to ‘Rule of 3’ descriptions
