It works best with a=1 since the aspect of completing the square and bracket factoring need a more sophisticated approach (version 2?). It includes a blank template for students to complete. A progression of mental maths strategies for addition and subtraction from a basic level to GCSE level. The strategies are grouped as ‘Change’, ‘Split’ or ‘Jump’. It invites students to change a problem, to an easier form, before splitting numbers or/and jumping along the virtual number line that exists in their heads.
