This can be done by building on the table known as key facts: 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x tables. This resource introduces the concept using cards which have counters arranged in groups of 7, repeated addition, multiplication and finally the solution. This thinking can easily be extended to find solutions outside the normal times tables e.g. 15 x 7 can be calculated using 10x7 + 5x7. When students are comfortable using the cards to support the 7x table, they can use the 5x + 2x method to complete the 7x table row of the multiplication grid. A game to reinforce the method of using key facts to calculate the 7x table is also included. The same concept can be applied using Cuisenaire® Rods. Use the black (7) rods instead of the groups of counters.
