Macbeth

(0)
A fun and engaging creative writing lesson based upon the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Pupils work in pairs to develop their use of higher level vocabulary and demonstrate their knowledge of the two characters before creating their own dating profile for either Macbeth or Lady Macbeth. Includes a modelled dating profile for Shakespeare himself! Pupils reflect upon their work through the use of a levelled mark scheme aimed at year 7 but could easily be altered.

Lord of the Flies Mini Scheme

A selection of ten lessons for the opening chapters of Lord of the Flies. This has been designed with my low ability year 10s in mind and as a result is quite structured, providing lots of opportunities to discuss and see example/scaffolded material. The lessons provide higher level vocabulary to develop pupils confidence, a mix of individual, paired and group work along with some artistic opportunities to explore the first four chapters of the novel. All resources are numbered.

Lord of the Flies - Beast From Water

A fast paced lesson that focuses on language analysis and justification of responses both verbally and written. Pupils are asked to justify their top 5 songs choices should they be marooned on the island as the boys are, a short cloze procedure allows pupils to recap on the first four chapters before language analysis commences with a clear and thorough example provided to guide pupils. This worked really well with my middle ability year 10s who can, on occasion, struggle to support their thoughts and ideas but were given lots more confidence to do so after the thought provoking starter. Al resources are included on the PowerPoint itself.

Lord of the Flies - Simon's Death

(0)
A challenging lesson used for my high ability year 11s to consolidate their knowledge of Simon throughout the text. Pupils were encouraged to rapidly recap on their knowledge of this pivotal character in an interactive starter, this was further strengthened through the use of the board game (need some dice for this section!) which also acted as a great visual aid for their revision before settling into analysis based upon a sample paper. All resources are included - the board game is the final slide on the PowerPoint and could be used in a multitude of ways - paired or group work for example.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

(0)
A lesson to explore characterisation through an examination of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Lots of opportunities for pupils to share and discuss ideas prior to writing. An extract exploring the dual nature of the infamous protagonist is used to spark discussion and compliment contextual information associated with Victorian Edinburgh. Pupils are then prompted to focus their writing to address some mini success criteria. There is also a worked example as a starting point!

Pupils are then given the opportunity to choose from a selection of items to personify. Includes a worked example to help assist pupils. The lesson culminates in a peer assessment activity to reduce teacher marking!

Analysis of all 18 poems from the WJEC poetry anthology. All AOs covered (content, language and structure and context) for each poem. Not all analysis is my own! I have put this onto Show My Homework for all my pupils to help with their revision. This has proven particularly helpful for pupils who may have been absent or are lacking confidence with some of the poems from the selection.

Oliver Twist Chapter Two - Meeting the Parish Board

(0)
A complete lesson that builds on pupils' ability to compare and contrast characters. A fun and engaging starter that initiates the 'spot the difference' theme of the lesson is followed by analysis of an image depicting Oliver and the parish board. Later the pupils read the accompanying extract and work on demonstrating their ability to select and retrieve key quotations. Students then complete an extended reflection which encourages them to delve into layers of meaning.

A Christmas Carol Very Superstitious

(0)
A lesson that is ideal to link with any of the ghosts, however, I found it worked particularly well with the introduction of Marley's ghost in stave one. There are lots of opportunities for speaking and listening skills to be developed as pupils explore the Victorians' thoughts on all things supernatural thus addressing A03 (context).
A Christmas Carol - A Changed Man

A Christmas Carol - A Changed Man

This lesson focuses on the transition between stave 4 and stave 5. Its main focus is how Scrooge has transformed as a character. Pupils are encouraged to consider the entire text and how they might adjust it for the starter, there is a suggestion of how to select readers using raffle tickets, before pupils are asked to engage in a 'snowball' activity culminating in language analysis. This lesson worked particularly well with a low ability group of year 10s!
