Students will need an hour or maybe a little longer to complete this sheet. The website address is on the top of the sheet. You may want to adapt - please let me know if you can improve this! Aimed at yr7s who are doing a 'What is Britain?&' topic.
This is a lesson via powerpoint which explains a hot desert climate. This is a second lesson into deserts having done a general intro beforehand. You may wish to use the red Interactions book to support this lesson.
The lesson starts with students describing the location and by the end they should be able to explain too.
This powerpoint includes an excellent animation (which I cannot take credit for) which shows students the air flow around the Earth.
This could come before or after a short writing task which answers the question above.
I have made it this evening having marked one set of books which have poor written English and also do not explain the reasons why he won (but describe them so well!).
The fifth lesson in Enquiry Question 1 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1.
This lesson looks at the human and physical on the drainage basin system and includes mini case studies. There is also an exam question included.
This lesson is also available as part of Enquiry Question 1 Bundle and a Water Bundle.
Thank you for looking.
This bundle contains 4 templates:
9 mark Assess
9 mark Evaluate
6 mark Assess
6 mark Explain
This should be printed out on A3, folded in half to make an A4 booklet, with each page on one side.
The format of how this works:
pg1 - Walkthrough - I’ve really tried to take a step-by-step guide (and for your weakest students they should only ever use this perhaps?)
pg2 - Template - This is where it’s more of a compartmentalised layout so they visualise the answer. I suggest when they have mastered the Walkthrough version, that they go straight to the Template Version.
pg3 - Exam Answer - so how they would see it in the exam
pg4 - Improved answer - I’ve put on a levels table in student speak and hen you’ve marked it, they have to find evidence of what you mean and fill in last column. Then there is space for them to make improvements to ONE section of their answer.
Please find a mock exam paper for Paper 3 (just Section A) to go with this year’s pre-release booklet. I have based the format on last year’s paper.
There is also a mark scheme attached to help you with your preparation.
The resource is fully there but I’ve had to insert some blank pages in to the document to prevent people from copying and pasting off the preview on here. Obviously delete the blank pages when printing!
I hope you and your students will find it useful and thank you for looking.
This is a writing frame/template for a 6-mark Explain question for AQA GCSE Geography. I am trialling this with my GCSE students. It is probably not perfect but I’ve tried to break it down as much as possible for students struggling with longer answers and higher-order command words.
This should be printed out on A3, folded in half to make an A4 booklet, with each page on one side.
The format of how this works:
pg1 - Walkthrough - I’ve really tried to take a step-by-step guide by using an example with different answers. It points out what’s good and what to improve on.
pg2 - Template - This is where it’s more of a compartmentalised layout. Hopefully they can use this to visually see how their answer will look.
pg3 - Exam Answer - so how they would see it in the exam
pg4 - Improved answer - I’ve put on a levels table in student speak and hen you’ve marked it, they have to find evidence of what you mean and fill in last column. Then there is space for them to make improvements to ONE section of their answer.
Thanks for looking and hope you found this useful to you and your students. Good luck with your results!
I also have writing frames/templates for 9-mark Assess and Evaluate and 6-mark Assess. These also come as a bundle.
This is the third lesson from Enquiry Question 1 of the Tectonics Unit.
This lesson combs through key terminology whilst looking at the different types of plate boundary. Students review their understanding of keywords at the start and end.
You may wish to use GeoActive Online 340 The Bam Earthquake, Iran 2003 factsheet and also Geofile Online Sept 2006 526 Hot Spots in Plate Tectonics - Evolution of a Theory to accompany this lesson. You can often download these for free online.
Thanks for looking.
This is the second lesson from Enquiry Question 1 of the Tectonics Unit.
This lessons walks through creating an hypothesis, scatter graphs, and a full Spearman’s Rank statistical test. It uses the Japan 2011 earthquake/tsunami for data.
There is an accompanying booklet for students to use alongside the powerpoint.
Thanks for looking.
Spanish, Polish and Lithuanian translations (checked by native speakers) for GCSE geography for Section A of Challenges in the human environment.
Also includes a tab of general exam words translations.
This a new set of questions (which mirror the two SAMs currently available for Paper 3) and is based on the JUNE 2012 pre-release resource booklet.
There is now a basic markscheme for content (including appropriate AO splits) but you will need to use the SAMs for levels table. This was somewhat tricky to put together as the old-prelease seems a lot wordier than the unseen resource booklets we are seeing so far.
I hope you find it useful.
A quick lesson concentrating on the command word ‘analyse’ for the Synoptic Paper 3 geography paper for Edexcel.
There are some practice questions using old-prelease stimuli with a markscheme.
Students need to complete a practice question from one of the SAMs beforehand to help with the flow of the lesson - resources for this are on the powerpoint.
Enjoy.
The second lesson from Enquiry Question 2 of the carbon and energy unit.
The lessons looks at the slow carbon cycle and looks at geology, volcanic outgassing, and chemical weathering as well as an overview of the rock cycle. The Hodder flag textbook is needed.
There is an independent study task to follow this lesson up with.
Thank you for looking.
The seventh lesson in Enquiry Question 2 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1.
This lesson looks at the effects climate change has on evaporation and precipitation. Included is an exam question with exemplar material (also available from examboard website).
This lesson is also available as part of Enquiry Question 2 Bundle and a Water Bundle.
Thank you for looking.
The last lesson in Enquiry Question 2 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1.
This lesson looks at the future of droughts and flooding. To end there is homework and a practice exam question.
This lesson is also available as part of Enquiry Question 2 Bundle and a Water Bundle.

The third lesson in Enquiry Question 2 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1.
This lesson looks at the Iran Wetlands as a case study for ecosystem services and also features an exam question and a mark scheme.
This lesson is also available as part of Enquiry Question 2 Bundle and a Water Bundle.

The fourth lesson in Enquiry Question 1 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1.
This lesson looks at infiltration rates and gets the students to conduct their own experiments around the school grounds. There is also a follow-up homework task (IST).
This lesson is also available as part of Enquiry Question 1 Bundle and a Water Bundle.
Thank you for looking.
Made this lesson as part of a short sequence to cover the 'Food' chapter of Section 3 in the new (2016) GCSE Geography syllabus for AQA.
This lesson would benefit from using the Hodder - Widdowson et al book (white/green cover).
This is a case study but has an essay template for students to use to plan an answer to a relevant exam questions based on the success of this case study. The longer questions with more demanding command words is a real concern for students taking this course, which is why I feel this resource is worth a look at.
This template could easily be adapted to other 'Evaluation' exam questions and will also help with DME structuring. Unfortunately there is no mark scheme at present for this one here. Once I have cobbled one together I will include (free to those who have already bought this resource- message me). Thanks.
Please find step-by-step guides and templates for 4 main command words for Geography A Level:
Explain
Analyse
Evaluate
Assess
Insert the powerpoint slides into your lessons when you introduce a specific exam question (change the question obviously!) and give out of a copy of the template for students to fill in. Gradually remove this scaffold over time.
I made this based on examboard advice and literature.
